Please could you clarify what makes you sure it is a Common ring-tailed Possum Pseudocheirus peregrinus, not a Common Brushtailed Possum Trichosurus vulpecula? (The most obvious difference is that the ringtail has a white tail tip with short fur, and the brush tail has a very furry black tail. Close up, their faces are similar.) In Canberra, Brushtails are common near houses, Ringtails are patchily distributed and mostly not near houses, so I cant confirm this until I have your answer to the question.
